The 13 best retro gaming gifts for the 2024 holidays
The stream of new video games seemingly never ends but, for some of us, nothing beats the classics. If you don't feel like hunting through eBay and local game shops for old cartridges to add to your loved one's collection, we've got some other gift ideas for the nostalgic gamer in your life -- from video upscalers for old consoles to retro-themed books and artwork. Using old controllers is a big part of retro gaming's charm, but sometimes there's a fine line between classic and antiquated. For those who like the original PlayStation or PS2, but aren't crazy about Sony's earliest gamepads, the 8BitDo Retro Receiver for PS lets a variety of modern controllers work with those consoles wirelessly. The adapter supports Sony's PS4 and PS5 pads, Microsoft's Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S controllers (including the Xbox Adaptive Controller), Nintendo's Wii U Pro and Switch Pro controllers and most of 8BitDo's own gamepad lineup.

If you've never died of dysentery, have you truly ever lived? In the world of retro gaming, Oregon Trail holds a special place in the collective memory. The Morning After: Dolby Atmos will use your TV to expand your speaker setups
Dolby has announced a new Atmos feature to pair your TV speakers with any wireless speakers you have in the room. Officially dubbed Dolby Atmos FlexConnect, the tech will appear first on 2024 TCL TVs. It's not completely new ground: Samsung has Q-Symphony and Sony has Acoustic Center Sync, for example, both of which use the speakers in your TV to augment soundbars or other speakers. Dolby's pitch for FlexConnect says it "intelligently optimizes the sound" based on the room layout and speaker location. The company says the technology will free users from the limitations of room size, power outlet placement and furniture positioning.
Analogue Pocket Review: The Best Way to Play Old Game Boy Cartridges
I'll admit it: I'm a skeptic, and a grouchy one at that. I rarely let fun or interesting new products go by without a "harumph" or a "humbug." That's why I think I need to issue a retraction here. See, when niche video game console maker Analogue announced the Analogue Pocket, its first handheld retro gaming system, I rolled my eyes and sneered. In my defense, Analogue's previous game machines, which played Nintendo and Sega games, were made in limited numbers, making them scarce and highly sought after.
2021 could be a great year for 'alternative' consoles
Despite the pandemic, it's been a pretty great year for video game hardware. Microsoft launched the Xbox Series X, a powerful obelisk packing a 12-teraflop GPU, and the smaller Series S, which can run games natively at 1440p resolution. Sony, meanwhile, released the PlayStation 5 and a cheaper Digital Edition that doesn't come with a disc drive. Both companies are struggling with stock shortages at the moment and a number of user-reported hardware issues. Still, it's a minor miracle that neither Sony nor Microsoft was forced to delay their next-gen launch.
